TK–Third Grade Instructional Quality
Supporting elementary literacy through the science of reading.
Expanding Early Literacy Support from Preschool to 3rd Grade
The 2024–2025 school year marks a major milestone for The Big Lift: our first time supporting transitional kindergarten through third grade classrooms during the traditional academic year. We currently partner with eight school districts across San Mateo County, supporting 7,500 transitional kindergarten through third grade students and their families.
Our goal is to create a seamless path of early literacy support that starts in preschool and continues through third grade-during the school year and beyond through our Inspiring Summers program.
Partnering for Literacy Success
Together with our school district partners, we are strengthening literacy efforts across the county. Every partnering district receives tailored and collaborative support including:
- One-on-one coaching for district literacy specialists to help teachers deliver evidence-based instruction
- Administrator supports to lead literacy systems change
- Instructional materials, training, and professional development grounded in the science of reading
- A common, science of reading validated student assessment to track progress and guide teaching (DIBELS)
- Support in designing and implementing district wide Literacy Action Plans
- Professional learning communities that foster collaboration and shared learning
By partnering with educators, families, and district leaders, we’re advancing changes in elementary school systems to ensure students receive the evidence-based support they need to become confident readers.
