Our Impact

The Need
The Big Lift was founded in the belief that all students should be supported to read proficiently by the end of third grade
In San Mateo County, too many students–especially students from low-income families, who are disproportionately students of color–are currently not meeting this critical benchmark.
Our Impact
Through our partnerships with school districts, funding to support aligned literacy instruction, and supports for educators and families, we aim to increase the percentage of students reading proficiently by the end of third grade.

The Big Lift currently serves 8,243 preschool through third grade students and their families across
San Mateo County.
The Big Lift prioritizes its resources on school
districts where third-grade reading proficiency
rates fall below the county average.
