Sold a Story: Understanding the Story Behind the Science of Reading

Decades of research show that there are specific, evidence-based skills that children can learn that help them become successful readers. Taken together, this research and the teaching strategies informed by it are called “the science of reading.”

Despite the many years of research on reading skills, how children are taught to read today might look different from what adults remember from their school years. That’s because, for more than a generation, incorrect ideas about how children learn to read held sway in schools and informed teaching methods. Educators and families alike were “sold a story” that actually made it harder for children to learn to read.
